News Package — Definition

A news package is a pre-produced, fully edited television news segment — typically 90 seconds to 3 minutes — combining reporter voiceover, interviews, B-roll, and stand-ups into a self-contained story.

What Is News Package?

A news package is a pre-produced, fully edited television news segment — typically 90 seconds to 3 minutes — that combines the reporter's scripted voiceover track, interview soundbites (SOTs), B-roll footage, graphics, and stand-ups into a single, self-contained narrative. It is the standard building block of television news and the format in which most organizational coverage will appear.

Example

A 2-minute package on a company's annual results opens with the anchor introducing the reporter, cuts to the reporter's voiceover over footage of headquarters and product lines, includes a 12-second soundbite from the CEO and an 8-second soundbite from an industry analyst, features a mid-piece stand-up outside the stock exchange, and closes with the reporter's concluding remark. The executive's entire media appearance is reduced to one 12-second clip within a larger story built by the journalist.

Why It Matters

Understanding the package format is essential for media-trained executives because it reveals a fundamental truth: the journalist is the narrator, not the spokesperson. The executive's role is to provide one or two compelling soundbites that serve the journalist's story structure. Executives who try to tell their own complete story — rather than feeding the strongest possible soundbite into the package — find themselves edited out entirely.
