What Is Diwaniya?
A diwaniya (ديوانية) is a Kuwaiti social and business institution — a regularly convened, privately hosted gathering held in a dedicated room or annex of a home, where men (and in separate settings, women) meet to discuss current affairs, business, politics, and community matters in an informal yet structured setting. Distinct from the majlis — which is typically attached to a person of authority and convened on an as-needed basis — the diwaniya is characterized by its regular schedule (often weekly on a fixed evening), its broader and more egalitarian attendance, and its function as the primary informal communication infrastructure of Kuwaiti business and political life.
A Kuwaiti merchant family has hosted a diwaniya every Tuesday evening for three generations.
