Authenticity Protocol — Definition

An authenticity protocol is a predefined set of communication practices that ensures an executive's public persona remains consistent, verifiable, and genuinely reflective of their values — preventing the drift into performative inauthenticity that audiences detect and punish.

What Is Authenticity Protocol?

An authenticity protocol is a structured, intentional framework of communication practices designed to ensure that an executive's public messaging, behavior, and digital presence remain genuinely aligned with their stated values and actual conduct — and are verifiable as such. It moves authenticity from a vague aspiration ('be yourself') to an operational discipline: maintaining consistency across audiences, refusing to claim values the organization does not act on, authorizing third-party verification of claims, and establishing internal accountability mechanisms that catch inauthenticity before it becomes public.

Example

A CEO who has publicly committed to sustainability as a core value institutes an authenticity protocol: (1) every external sustainability claim must reference a specific, verifiable metric publicly reported in the company's ESG disclosures; (2) marketing copy claiming 'carbon-neutral operations' is blocked until the internal sustainability officer signs off; (3) the CEO's social media posts about sustainability are drafted in consultation with the operations team to ensure they reflect current reality, not aspiration presented as achievement. When an activist group later scrutinizes the company's claims, every one is verifiable, and the 'greenwashing' accusation does not stick.

Why It Matters

Audiences — from consumers to institutional investors — have become highly sophisticated at detecting performative authenticity: the gap between what a leader says and what the organization does. One exposed inconsistency can unravel years of reputation-building. An authenticity protocol transforms authenticity from a personality trait (some leaders have it, some do not) into a repeatable system — and in an era of earned-media skepticism and social-media accountability, that system is increasingly a governance requirement, not a communications nicety.
