How can an executive build presence on camera and on stage?

Executive presence is often described as something you either have or you do not — an innate quality that cannot be taught. This is incorrect. Presence is a set of trainable skills operating across three dimensions: vocal, physical, and cognitive. Each can be measured, practiced, and improved.

The vocal dimension: Presence begins with breath. Shallow, nervous breathing shortens vocal range, accelerates delivery, and introduces vocal fry — all of which read as uncertainty on camera and on stage. Broadcast breathing — diaphragmatic, paced, with deliberate pauses — gives the voice weight and gives the audience time to process. Practice: record yourself delivering a message, then deliver it again with a full breath before each sentence. The difference is immediate and measurable.

The physical dimension: On stage, presence is about occupying space with intention — movement that serves the message, stillness that communicates confidence. On camera, it is about the frame — the economy of gesture, the angle of the head, the behavior of the hands under pressure. Both are trained through recorded rehearsal with frame-by-frame review. You cannot fix what you cannot see, and most executives have never seen themselves the way an audience or a camera sees them.

The cognitive dimension: The foundation of presence is the ability to think while people are watching. This is trained not by memorizing scripts but by rehearsing under realistic pressure until the message framework is so internalized that retrieval does not require switching from conversation mode to performance mode. The brain stays present, and presence is the result.

The executive who invests in all three dimensions — vocal, physical, cognitive — does not just look better on camera. They become harder to rattle, easier to trust, and more memorable to every audience they address.
